A new geologic map of the Long Valley Caldera, Mammoth Mountain, and the Middle Fork canyon of the San Joaquin River including Devils Postpile National Monument, recounts the geologic and volcanic history of the area east of the Sierra Nevada in far greater detail than any previously published report.

UPDATE: Shooting Range Fire grows to 1,100 acres

The Shooting Range Fire grew to about 1,100 acres Thursday morning near USA Parkway. The fire was about 40 percent contained at 9 a.m., according to Storey County Manager Pat Whitten.

Road construction on 395, Lake Mary Road

BISHOP— The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will begin a $2.2 million emergency construction project on US Hwy 395 near Mono Lake, north of Lee Vining, CA starting Tuesday, July 12, 2016. The project will repair guardrail and install temporary rockfall protection measures due to damage from the Marina Fire.
MAMMOTH LAKES—The Town of Mammoth Lakes with the Constructor, Herback General Engineering will be constructing a multi-use path and road realignment in the Lakes Basin on Around Lake Mary Loop Road from Lake Mary Road to Lake George Road.

CDFW Opens Chimineas Unit of Carrizo Plain Ecological Reserve for Apprentice Deer Hunters

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) will be holding a draw for an apprentice deer hunt on the Chimineas Unit of the Carrizo Plains Ecological Reserve. The two-day hunt, which is being offered in cooperation with the California Deer Association (CDA), will be held on Sept. 17-18 on the 30,000-acre reserve in San Luis Obispo County.
