Waterway improvements eyed in Eastern Sierra

Bishop resident Randy Short, 68, has been reappointed to the California Boating and Waterways Commission by Governor Jerry Brown and is hoping to improve access to local waters. Short was first appointed by the Governor in 2014 for a one-year term, the Governor has now appointed him to a four-year term. Short has been president of Almar Management Inc., a marina management company, since 2000, where he was chief operating officer from 1988 to 2000. Prior to 1988 he held various positions at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area. Short is also a member of the board of directors of the Association of Marine Industries and of the Marina Recreation Association. He also sits on the Recreational Boating Leadership Council and the Channel Islands Harbor Foundation. As a Commissioner on the Boating and Waterways Commission, Short said he has been assisting Inyo County, Mono County, the Inyo National Forest and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power with the Eastern Sierra Waterways Project, which aims to see handicap-accessible docks installed on local lakes.

Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra’s Operation Mountain Freedom event

40 Wounded Warriors along with families and guests were in town this past week for Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra’s Operation Mountain Freedom event. At Thursday’s luncheon were, from left, Ed Hurley, Owner of Burgers, Mike Murphy, a veteran from Rialto, Jodi Bingham and Korean War vet Bing Bingham of Gardnerville. At the luncheon, the Marine Officers Basic Class 6-67 made a donation of $20,000 towards the National Wounded Warrior Center planned for Mammoth Lakes.

Inyo votes for Adventure

The Adventure Trails System pilot project has generated its share of controversy in Inyo County. Since the project’s proposal in 2012, Inyo residents have expressed concerns about the Trails System’s impact on properties adjacent to the proposed routes, given noise, air quality, and safety issues, as well as the System’s impact on public lands.

Bill would raise California smoking age to 21

In an effort to keep cigarettes out of the hands of teenagers, state Sen. Ed Hernandez, D-Azusa, announced legislation that would raise the legal smoking age in California from 18 to 21.

Tesla charging station opens in Lone Pine

Construction on the Owens Valley’s first Tesla Supercharghing Station is complete and Tesla drivers could start charging their cars in Lone Pine as early as today.

Bill introduced to make Alabama Hills a National Scenic Area

Congressman Paul Cook introduced HR 496, the Alabama Hills National Scenic Area Establishment Act, legislation that would establish the Alabama Hills National Scenic Area. This designation would encompass 18,610 acres of the scenic Alabama Hills and would preserve it for recreational use by the public and future generations. A Bureau of Land Management (BLM) map of the proposed Alabama Hills National Scenic Area can be found here.

Tribal cop facing charges

A Bishop Tribal Police officer was arrested Tuesday, Jan. 6, and charged with battery, assault with a stun gun, false imprisonment and acting under the color of authority after attempting to enforce a restraining order on the Bishop reservation.
